I am pretty sure we have all been asked at one time or another, what we do for a living, whether it’s down the pub after a few bevies or basically anytime you meet someone new, it has to be in the all time top three questions on the all time top ten list of questions to ask someone new. Of course if I had a penny for every time the gleeful ‘got any cheap holidays’ response to my ‘I am a Travel Agent’ answer to the top three question of all time, from the last 22 years, I would probably have my own island next to Richard’s Necker Island with a cocktail in one hand and a nice Cuban in the other! Of course all this is in hindsight and here I am 22 years on still answering gratis the eternal cheap holiday question, with the usual of course I can – despite the fact I am still waiting for someone to ask me for a price for the most expensive holiday in the world.

This year, cheap holidays under the current reccession, depression or what ever you want to call it, have become a buzz word for those seeking to chase a bit of guaranteed sunshine away from these cloudy shores, because lets be frank, it doesnt matter if its 120 degrees in the shade this summer here on old blighty, who wants to stay here and frolic in Margate’s mirky waters, when you can frolic in the azure seas of the mediterranean and beyond for 7 days for probably less as a weekend on any of the British coasts? To be honest, a cheap holiday is easy to find if you know where to go what to look for. Make sure you do your homework and research on the subject, its all very well saying i am going to Lloret del Mar for a hundred quid ‘cos it a Cheap Holiday! but have you thought how much it would set you back once you reach your destination, I mean is it comparable to you forking out a little bit more to go to a Euro-less zone like Egypt or Turkey where once you get there your holiday money is a third less? What i am saying is there is much more to the cheap holiday question that meets the eye, for sure cheap holidays should be about the total holiday cost, dont be taken in by gimicks such as free child, places, at the end of the day just make sure there are no hidden extras. Its so easy to purchase your holiday in seperate elements by. And despite the Euro not been the best it’s been against the pound, there are still some great destinations within the Euro Zone that can still be cost effective even once on the ground, the Greek islands are still a firm favourite with British travellers, with lovely little apartments and B&B’s, eating is still relatively cheap and nutritious with a gyro (this is a delicious wrap with slices of meat and tzatziki and salad) costing about €1.Basicaly Greel salads, local dishes with their huge selection of meat to vegan varied dishes can be very cost effective and no more than4.00 per person, and as for the beer and wine as long as you stay on the local brews it will always be cheap, and going out on the tiles at night doesnt need to cost the earth. Same goes for the destinations of Egypt & Turkey, these to countries are still the best cheap holiday destinations this year.

Cheap Holidays question by : Any good tips for getting cheap plane tickets around the holidays?
I’m from Portland and I want to spend New Year’s in Santa Maria (I’d fly into Santa Barbara). I’d probably want to fly in on the 30th and stay for about a week. Does anyone have any good tips to help get cheaper tickets? I’m a poor college student and holiday flights are SO expensive!

The best thing you can do to get a cheaper ticket during the holidays is to be as flexible with your travel dates as you can. While you may wish to fly in on the 30th, you may find better deals flying on the 28th or 29th (the Tuesday or Wednesday before) that would help lower your costs.

If you absolutely cannot move your dates, the best thing you can do otherwise (short of checking other airports close by, such as San Luis Obispo or even the Los Angeles-area airports) is to buy your ticket as soon as possible. Airlines do not tend to discount their fares around the holidays, meaning that the prices are certain only to increase the closer you get to your travel dates.

Since you’re a college student, you may also wish to check with a travel agent, such as studentuniverse.com, that deals with discounted tickets for college students.

The Channel Islands – Top Destination For Those Who Want to Save on Their Travel Money This Summer

Despite Sterling’s recent rise to a five-month high, it is fair to say that the pound is still relatively weak in relation to the Euro and the Dollar – especially compared to last year. However, if you are still eager to cross some amount of water for your holiday this year, whilst still making the most of your travel money, the Channel Islands may be just the destination.

JerseyThe Island of Jersey is the largest (45 square miles) and southernmost of the Channel Islands. Since the Second World War Jersey has been popular with tourists due to its intriguing English/French history and temperate climate that is similar to the south coast of England. Much of Jersey’s land is agricultural and is well known for walking and adventure, whilst the capital, St. Helier is famed for its Victorian architecture and sights of historical/cultural interest such as the Jersey Museum.

GuernseyTo the north of the archipelago, Guernsey covers just over 25 square miles of land. Geographically, the north of Guernsey is more low-lying and contains an abundance of sandy beaches whilst the south includes a higher plateau and a more rugged coastline. St. Peter Port, on the eastern coast is home to over 16,000 people and has a deep natural harbour from which it gets its name. Like Jersey, there is an airport serving the island, and ferry links to England and France.

AlderneyAt just three square miles, the even-smaller island of Alderney lies to the north east. Again, most of the island’s beaches are found in the north, but the island is also known for its rich wildlife including Puffins and the native Blonde Hedgehog. The island is also unique due to its lack of trees and the great many rocks that surround it. The nightlife on the island is considered vibrant, whilst Alderney Week runs during early August which includes a torchlight procession and a “Daft Raft Race”.

Sark and HermThese two islands have an area of just over three square miles between them. Sark is the larger and consists of two main parts: Greater Sark in the north and Little Sark in the south – whilst both are home to around 600 people. There are no cars on Sark and Herm, instead visitors are urged to walk around and can only access the islands via boat. Herm is home to just 60 people, whom are tenants of the State of Guernsey – however, camping and self-catering is available.

So make the most of foreign exchange rates this summer and head over to the Channel Islands.
